Ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata) is a tropical herb native to countries of Philippines, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, and parts of Australia. The essential oil is extracted from the flowers of the ylang-ylang tree grown in Madagascar through steam distillation. It has a deep floral and fruity aroma that is often used as both top notes and base notes in perfumes. It promotes relaxation and mood upliftment through aromatherapy and is also used topically to treat a variety of skin conditions. Application • Diffuse Aroma: Aromatherapy using ylang-ylang can ease stress and anxiety and enhance mood. It acts by lowering blood pressure and heart rate. It is traditionally used as a natural aphrodisiac as well.
  • You can diffuse a few drops of the oil with water in an automatic diffuser or use an aroma lamp or reed diffuser for similar effects.
• Skincare: Ylang-ylang can effectively balance the oil and sebum levels on the skin and treat acne. It can soothe any irritation and inflammation on the skin and enhance its healing. It further boosts blood circulation and maintains hydration in the skin, which encourages the growth of hair and skin. Applying the essential oil over scars and stretch marks can help diminish their appearance.
  • You can introduce ylang-ylang to your skincare by adding it to your skincare products in the ratio of 5 drops per 15 grams of the product.
  • Massage a blend of 7-10 drops of ylang-ylang essential oil in 15 grams of transport oil on your body to achieve these effects.
  • The oil can also be added to baths with a ratio of 4-7 drops per carrier.
  • Alternatively, you can dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in 200g of boiled water with 3-5 drops of the essential oil and use it for douching the skin.
• Haircare: The essential oil has antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties and can also regulate sebum levels, thereby being an effective solution for dandruff. It further improves the hair texture and prevents breakage. There is evidence that suggests that ylang-ylang can be used to treat symptoms of alopecia as well.
  • Add 5 drops of the essential oil to 2 tablespoons of warm carrier oil and massage it on your scalp for enhanced hair health.
  • You can also add a few drops to your shampoo to achieve similar results.
• Topical Treatment: The application of ylang-ylang essential oil can relieve irritation, inflammation, and swelling in the body. This can soothe the pain and swelling caused due to arthritis and injuries and also speeds up the healing process. It elicits a soothing effect on your muscles. The oil also has antiseptic qualities and can help to heal acne, wounds, rashes, and boils.
  • Use an oil blend of 4 drops Ylang-Ylang Essential Oil, 4 drops Sandalwood Essential Oil, 4 drops Sweet Orange Essential Oil, and 2 drops Bergamot Essential Oil in a carrier oil of your choice to massage your body.
  • For acne, wounds, rashes, and boils, apply a blend of ylang-ylang with tea tree in a carrier oil on the affected areas.
• Menstrual Health: It is also effective in enhancing the female reproductive organs by normalizing the alkaline balance of the vagina and reducing the symptoms of PMS, including mood swings and cramps by balancing the hormones.
  • Use a blend of ylang-ylang, lavender, and sage in a carrier oil to massage around the lower abdomen and the back to ease discomfort.
• Room Freshener: You can use the essential oil to DIY an air freshener to refresh the aroma of any space with the flowery smell of ylang-ylang. The essential oil is effective against flying insects and bugs and hence an air freshener can repel them.
  • Add the essential oil along with witch hazel or white vinegar to a glass bottle and shake gently to mix. Add water to dilute the mixture if needed and spray it in the corners of your house.
  •  Do not use essential oils internally.
  •  Do not apply directly to the skin; always dilute with a carrier oil.
  •  Keep out of reach of children.
  •  Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
  •  Do not use citrus oils before exposure to UV light.
  •  Use only pure essential oils; avoid synthetic fragrances.
  •  Avoid prolonged exposure without ventilation.
  •  Store essential oils and carrier oils properly to avoid degradation and rancidity.
